Chandigarh Spinal Rehab Centre

Plot 1A, Sector 28-A, Chandigarh

A 20-bed home for spinal-cord-injury patients to nurture mind, body and spirit — every space planned around life on a wheelchair. Inaugurated by Smt. Kirron Kher, MP Chandigarh.

Chandigarh Spinal Rehab is a home for spinal cord injury patients to nurture their mind, body and spirit, with modern equipment, physiotherapists, a team of doctors, peer counsellors, nurses and adequate infrastructure. Spaces for vocational skills, sports, yoga, meditation and spiritual workshops encourage every person to find reason, joy and purpose.

The philosophy of the complete design revolves around the needs and behaviour of spinal cord injury persons on wheelchairs. The available space was divided into four segments — residential area, routine check-up and medical facilities, food, and sports and recreation. The residential area comprises dormitories and private rooms to cater to every level of patient: two six-bed dormitories for men and women and four twin-sharing private rooms, each with wheelchair-compatible toilets.

The interior of every room was planned around the height and width of the beds, space for an attendant to rest, wheelchair parking and routine activity. A nursing station with medical facilities and a treatment room, a physiotherapy hall, therapy and multipurpose halls, a basketball court, a practising ramp and tracks complete the programme.

Natural pine is used for all woodwork — low in cost, light in weight and adding a natural aroma to the ambience. Floors are anti-skid, double-charge full-body vitrified tiles recommended for wheelchair movement, and Agra red sandstone paves the wheelchair tracks through the gardens.
